Artist Alert: Alessi's Ark

Alessi's Ark

Back in the (g)olden days of Myspace, I used to enjoy discovering new music.

One evening, I randomly stumbled across Alessi's page. Here was this 18-year old literally making unique and interesting music from her bedroom in a self-styled "handmade" sort of way.

I think she literally coined the phrase “handmade”…this idea of likening music-making to homely patch-quilt making before the mass production era. It's done with love, skill and dedication.

Alessi was soon picked up by EMI Music and sent to work in the US with excellent producer and engineer Mike Mogis, a personal choice by Alessi herself.  A champion of the analogue warmth of yesteryear and he masterfully applied that same warmth to Alessi’s songs of Urban Folk, as I like to see them, to create her debut album ‘Notes from the Treehouse’.

Now signed to the very artist-focussed label Bella Union, Alessi and her band, Alessi’s Ark, continue to tour and make records; the latest offering being ‘Time Travel’.

Alessi doesn't do "cool" as we know it...never has, probably never will. She's a genuine artist who makes music that comes from her soul.  It's personal, quirky, soulful, dreamy and so very sweet. Now THAT is cool.

Alessi's Ark will be supporting Laura Marling on her September dates in the US.
